To produce a standard fuchsia regularly tie the stem to a cane for support and to maintain straight, upright growth. Any side shoots and flowers are removed when large enough to do so without damaging the central stem. Any leaves on the stem should be left in place. Stop the main stem at 105-120cm (3½'-4') or your desired height, having left the uppermost 5-6 side shoots in place to form the head. Side shoots are stopped at 2-3 pairs of leaves until the head of the standard fuchsia is formed. After the final stopping single flowered varieties will flower in approximately 60 days, semi double flowered varieties after 70 days and double flowered varieties after 80 days.
The plants can be moved outdoors at the end of May or early June once the risk of frost has passed. The plants can remain in pots on a sheltered patio or planted in the border. Keep the plants well watered in dry spells and feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed. Regular dead heading and removal of berries will encourage further flower production.
Take the plants back into the greenhouse before the first frost and over winter at a minimum temperature 5ºC (41ºF). The head can be lightly trimmed back at this time. Hardy fuchsia varieties should also be moved into the greenhouse to protect them from frost which would kill all growth above ground. Rest the plants over winter, but do not dry them off completely. Occasional watering will be necessary to prevent the compost becoming dust dry.
The plant can should be started in to growth in February or March potting into a larger pot and cutting back the shoots to within three or four leaf joints of the previous year's growth, maintaining a balanced shape. Give the plant a good watering, but avoid over watering in the early stages of growth. Pinch out the growing tips of new growth once or twice to maintain a good shape and a bushy head.
