My onions are rotting from the neck down, what should I do?

Onions rotting from the neck down is sign of a fungal disease known as "neck rot". Scales of infected onions become soft, pale brown and semi-transparent. The infected area, normally around the neck of the bulb becomes covered with a grey fungal growth and the bulb tissue dries out. Black fungal resting bodies known as sclerotia develop on the infected area.
Scelerotia can remain on plant debris or fall to the ground.

The disease is often first seen when the onions are in store and is spread by spores or sclerotia. Maintain a three to four year rotation between onion crops. Store only, well dried, firm bulbs. Fertilisers should not be applied after mid-summer and those containing amounts of nitrogen should be avoided at all times. Inspect stored onions regularly and remove infected bulbs.
