How do you grow purslane?

Choose a sunny position and sow the Purslane seeds from April to August 1cm (½″) deep into a finely raked soil that has had grit incorporated to aid drainage. Make regular sowings at monthly intervals to ensure a continual supply of leaves. When large enough to handle thin the seedlings to 10cm (4″) apart. Keep the plants well watered in dry spells.

Start harvesting the leaves as required from about 6-8 weeks from sowing. The flavour will vary depending on the time of day the leaves are picked. Leaves picked early in the morning will have a stronger tangy flavour than those picked in late afternoon. Harvesting can continue until the plants are cut down by the first frosts.
