How do you grow Gardenia Crown Jewels?
Posted by Dobies Staff on 19 February 2014 02:21 pm

The Gardenia Crown Jewels is an evergreen shrub that is hardy down to -10°C. The plant will will grow to a height of 60cm (24") and will eventually have a spread of approximately 120cm (4ft). Gardenia plants will grow in a wide range of soils. The plants require a well drained, moisture retentive, neutral to acid soil and a sheltered position. Grown in containers, an ericaceous compost should be used. Choose a sunny position that receives some shade at the hottest part of the day or grow the plant in part shade. Plants grown in full shade will produce fewer flowers. An ericaceous liquid feed can be applied during the summer months at four week intervals.

Occasionally flower buds may drop from the plant and this can be the result of dry or wet soils, insect attack, root damage or over feeding.

Little pruning is required but if necessary this should be carried out immediately after flowering.
