How do I care for the Cordyline Red Sensation?

The cordyline requires a sunny position that is sheltered from cold winds and a well-drained soil. The plants can be grown in the garden or in pots on the patio.

When they are grown in containers it is best to use a John Innes number 3 compost to which grit has been added to ensure good drainage. Keep the plants well watered during the growing season and feed the plants once a month.

In colder parts of the country and in severe winters protection from frost by wrapping up the plant in fleece will be necessary. Plants planted in the garden will benefit from a mulch of bark to give added frost protection to the roots. Plants in containers can be overwintered in a greenhouse at a temperature of 5°C (41°F).

As the plants grow the older leaves will die and should be removed when they come away easily from the trunk.
