How can canker on apples and pears be controlled?

Apple and Pear Canker is a common and widespread disease that can also affect Ash, Beech, Hawthorn, Sorbus and Willow trees.

The wind borne spores infect growth in spring usually near a wound, bud or small side branch. Sunken lesions develop, the centre shrinks and cracks, forming concentric circles of flaky bark which may break away. As the canker develops it may girdle the branch causing the growth above to die back. In summer white fungal pustules appear on the canker followed by red fruiting bodies in winter. The disease can infect the fruit while still on the tree which is normally situated around the eye, resulting in the fruit remaining on the tree overwinter.

Ensure apples and pear trees are planted in a well-drained soil. Avoid over application of fertilizers high in nitrogen. Badly affected trees should be felled and burnt. Prune out infected growth and remove the fruit where possible. On large branches and the trunk pare away infected wood. Treat all wounds with Bio Arbrex Seal And Heal or similar product.
