How do I care for my Colchicum bulbs?

The Colchicum, or Autumn Crocus, is ideal for naturalising in the garden and will produce huge bare-stemmed flowers in autumn followed by fleshy green leaves in spring.

Colchicums require a moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter, in a sheltered position either in full sun or partial shade. On heavy clay soils incorporate some well rotted garden compost into the soil prior to planting.

Plant the bulbs 7.5cm deep and 10-15cm apart. When grown they will reach a height of up to 30cm.

Colchicums can also be grown in a shallow container indoors (no soil required) and then planted outside as soon as the flowers begin to fade.
